The Den (2013)
A young woman studying the habits of webcam chat users from the apparent safety of her apartment witnesses a brutal murder online and is quickly immersed in a nightmare in which she and her loved ones are targeted for the same grisly fate as the first victim.
What people think about The Den
The Den is one of those rare techno-thrillers that turns the everyday glow of a laptop screen into a trapdoor, using its screen-based format not as a gimmick but as the engine of its dread. It starts with the casual, almost mundane rhythm of online chatting and research, then tightens the screws with unnerving realism—glitches, hacked webcams, and the sickening feeling that privacy is just a comforting myth. Zachary Donohue keeps the tension ratcheting higher with clean, propulsive execution and a sharp undercurrent of commentary about anonymity and the false safety of observing instead of participating. Fair warning: it’s brutal and relentless, and the violence can be a lot, but if you want a horror film that feels disturbingly plausible in the way it invades your modern life, this one sticks.
The Den is clearly aiming to be a modern, screenlife-style nightmare about how online curiosity can turn into total vulnerability, and it commits hard to that premise. When it works, the format creates a nasty sense of immediacy and a few sequences land with real dread, helped by a game lead performance from Melanie Papalia. But the story escalates so aggressively that the characters start making choices that feel more like plot fuel than believable behavior, and the “internet is dangerous” message can come off heavy-handed rather than insightful. If you’re sensitive to webcam-based humiliation, relentless cruelty, and severe gore—or you need your thrillers to feel grounded and pay off cleanly—this one may feel more aggravating than scary.
