Justice League Dark (2017)

Justice League Dark is what happens when DC stops looking to the skies for salvation and starts rummaging in the shadows—delivering a brisk, wickedly fun supernatural thriller that feels like a haunted-house ride with a detective’s pulse. It pairs Batman’s hard-edged skepticism with John Constantine’s razor-dry charm and Zatanna’s stage-magician swagger, letting the animation cut loose with eerie imagery, inventive spellcraft, and action that actually has bite. The vibe is darker and more occult than your standard cape-and-cowl team-up, with a mystery engine that keeps things moving and a mythology-rich introduction to DC’s weirder, wonderful corner. It is rated R and doesn’t soften its violence, so if you want bright, four-quadrant heroics this isn’t that—but if you’re curious about DC’s supernatural side, it’s a terrific gateway.

Justice League Dark is clearly aiming to be a slick, occult-flavored team-up that drags Batman into Constantine’s messy supernatural world, and the premise is genuinely fun. The problem is it crams a lot of lore and moving parts into a short runtime, so the plot can feel rushed and oddly convoluted, with several characters showing up more as nameplates than fully realized players. If you’re hoping for a genuinely creepy, slow-burn horror vibe or deep character work, this likely won’t satisfy—it's more brisk action with spooky window dressing than true dread. Still, Matt Ryan’s Constantine is the standout, the animation delivers some strong set pieces, and if you just want a fast, R-rated magical DC romp, it can do the job.
