Cooties (2014)

Cooties is the kind of horror-comedy that earns its cult appeal with a wickedly original hook: take the everyday chaos of an elementary school and crank it into a full-blown, feral outbreak that’s as funny as it is freaky. It’s gleefully irreverent, splattering gross-out gore with the timing of a good farce, and the real treat is watching Elijah Wood, Alison Pill, and Rainn Wilson bounce off each other as a bickering, panicked, oddly resourceful band of teachers. The vibe is fast, mean, and cartoonishly tense—more “laughing through your fingers” than nightmare fuel—so if you like your scares spiked with punchlines, it’s a blast. But if the idea of kids as the monsters (and the R-rated mayhem that follows) sounds too uncomfortable, this one might be a pass.

Cooties is clearly trying to be a gleefully nasty mash-up of zombie mayhem and workplace comedy, with teachers bickering their way through a kid-led outbreak, and that idea has real potential. The problem is it often plays like a sketch stretched to feature length: the humor is hit-or-miss, the horror isn’t tense enough to compensate, and the story lurches from set piece to set piece without building to a particularly satisfying payoff. If you’re squeamish about violence involving children or you want either sharp satire or genuinely scary thrills, this will likely feel ugly and undercooked rather than cathartic. Still, the cast commits (especially Wood and Wilson), and there are a few enjoyably gross moments that might work if you’re in the mood for dumb, mean-spirited midnight-movie chaos.
