Mercy (2014)

Mercy works best when it keeps the horror intimate: a family returning to a creaking old house, trying to do the right thing for a fading grandmother, and slowly realizing love and fear can live in the same room. Peter Cornwell leans into a moody, dread-soaked atmosphere where small glances and uneasy silences do as much work as the shadows, and the central trio—Frances O’Connor holding the family together, with Chandler Riggs and Joel Courtney as sons caught between skepticism and belief—makes the supernatural feel personal rather than gimmicky. It’s a quieter, more emotionally rooted kind of thriller-horror, less about constant shocks and more about the unsettling question of what, exactly, has been passed down through generations. If you want relentless jump-scare fireworks, this may feel restrained, but if you like eerie slow-burn tension with a human heartbeat, Mercy is an easy recommendation.

Mercy is clearly aiming for a Stephen King-style family-in-peril chiller, mixing small-town dread with a creepy, possibly supernatural grandmother at the center. The problem is it often feels like a collection of familiar horror beats rather than a story with its own identity, so seasoned genre fans may find themselves predicting the turns well in advance. The effects work doesn’t help—some of the CGI looks too artificial to sell the fear, which undercuts the tension when the movie needs you to buy in most. If you’re a King completist or want a mild, teen-friendly spooky watch with a solid cast doing their best, it may pass the time; if you want fresh scares or truly unsettling atmosphere, you’ll probably be disappointed.
