Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is the franchise’s most energized detour, swapping suburban stillness for a lived-in Oxnard neighborhood vibe where the humor feels natural, the friendships feel real, and the scares hit with a quicker pulse. Christopher Landon keeps the found-footage gimmick feeling freshly motivated, using smart camera placement to turn ordinary apartments, hallways, and late-night hangouts into pressure cookers that can snap from funny to frightening in a heartbeat. It’s also one of the series’ most satisfying entries for mythology-minded fans, threading its occult clues into the larger Paranormal Activity tapestry without requiring homework to enjoy the ride. Fair warning: it’s louder, rougher, and more profane (and more explicit) than some entries, but if you want a brisk, crowd-pleasing horror-thriller with inventive set pieces and a welcome change of perspective, this one earns its jolts.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones clearly wants to inject the series’ found-footage formula with a younger, more street-level energy and tie its mythology together in a bigger way. The problem is it still leans hard on the same old “camera on, bang in the night” rhythm, with jump scares you can see being set up a mile away, so if you’re already tired of the franchise’s tricks, this won’t convert you. It also cranks up the crude humor, constant profanity, and some explicit sexual content, which can feel more distracting than daring depending on your taste. That said, the leads have decent chemistry and the lore connections are the main reason to watch—just don’t expect genuinely fresh terror, and definitely skip it if you’re sensitive to graphic violence or animal distress.
