The Keeper of Lost Causes (2013)

The Keeper of Lost Causes is Nordic noir at its most confidently engineered: a cold-case mystery that pulls you in with methodical sleuthing and then tightens the screws with a steady, unnerving sense of dread. Director Mikkel Nørgaard paints Copenhagen in bruised tones and quiet menace, letting the atmosphere do half the talking while the investigation does the rest. At the center, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares make a terrific odd-couple pair—prickly, funny in the driest way, and unexpectedly human—which keeps the film crackling even when the subject matter turns grim. It’s a bleak ride and not for viewers who want their crime stories cozy, but if you like smart, well-crafted thrillers that feel lived-in and relentlessly absorbing, this one earns your time.

The Keeper of Lost Causes is clearly aiming for a moody, procedural Scandinavian cold-case thriller, anchored by a prickly lead detective and a slow unpeeling of what happened to a missing politician. The problem is it often feels more competent than compelling: the plotting can be fairly predictable, the villain logic strains credibility if you think about it too hard, and the pacing has stretches that play like dutiful box-ticking rather than mounting tension. If you want a twisty mystery that surprises you or a crime film with a really distinctive voice, this may leave you cold. But if you’re happy with a solid, grim investigation, strong central performances, and a straightforward case that moves to a clean resolution, it’s an efficient way to spend the time.
