Open Windows (2014)

Open Windows is a slick little jolt of modern paranoia that turns a laptop screen into a full-blown thriller playground, and it’s startling how much suspense Nacho Vigalondo squeezes out of pop-ups, webcams, and split-second clicks. Elijah Wood makes Nick’s fan-boy curiosity feel uncomfortably believable, while the film’s jittery, propulsive editing keeps you leaning forward as the “just one more window” temptation spirals into a tight cat-and-mouse. The vibe is tense, stylish, and breathless, like being trapped in a live feed you can’t stop watching, with Sasha Grey and Neil Maskell adding a sharp edge of danger and unpredictability. It’s not for everyone—if you hate screen-life storytelling or prefer your action less frantic—but if you’re in the mood for an inventive, high-wire techno-thriller, this one delivers.

Open Windows is clearly trying to be a modern techno-thriller about voyeurism, celebrity, and how easily a screen can turn you into an accomplice, and the “all-on-the-desktop” presentation is a genuinely clever hook. The problem is that the story keeps piling on twists and fake-outs until it starts feeling less like smart escalation and more like frantic overcomplication, asking you to swallow a lot of implausible moves just to keep the game going. Elijah Wood sells the anxious, out-of-his-depth vibe, and there are spurts of real tension, but the film’s constant need to outsmart you can become exhausting rather than gripping. If you like sleek, grounded thrillers or get annoyed when plots rely on convoluted manipulation, this may test your patience; if you enjoy high-concept gimmicks and don’t mind the logic wobbling for the sake of momentum, you’ll have a better time.
