Lovesick (2014)

Lovesick has the rare rom-com trick of feeling both familiar and freshly wired, taking the fear of intimacy and turning it into a playful, heartfelt premise with real comic bite. It’s anchored by a genuinely likable lead performance, the kind that makes you root for Charlie even when the story leans into his most absurd, panic-spiked moments. The vibe is breezy and charming, with laughs that come from character rather than cheap cynicism, and a sweetness that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. If you prefer your romance grounded and realistic, the heightened setup may not be your flavor—but if you’re open to a slightly offbeat date movie with a warm center, it’s an easy, refreshing watch.

Lovesick is clearly aiming for a high-concept rom-com with a dark twist, using Charlie’s “love makes me lose my mind” problem as a metaphor for commitment fears and anxiety. The issue is that the execution often feels oddly sterile and awkward, with jokes that land softly (or not at all) and a tone that can’t decide whether it wants to be edgy or cuddly. Matt LeBlanc has a likable presence and the setup has potential, but the movie rarely turns that into real momentum, so it can play more boring than charming.
