Alex Proyas leans into spectacle over solemnity, delivering brisk action, colorful creatures, and a pulpy, self-aware vibe that makes the whole thing feel like a lavish storybook come to life. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau brings a surprisingly grounded charm as Horus, Gerard Butler has a blast chewing the scenery as Set, and Brenton Thwaites provides a human-scale heartbeat that keeps the quest moving. If you’re craving realism or historical authenticity, this isn’t your temple—but if you want a fun, high-energy escape that commits to its own outrageous imagination, it’s an easy ticket.

Gods of Egypt is aiming for a big, candy-colored mythic blockbuster—gods brawling, a scrappy human sidekick, and a straightforward quest through a fantasy version of ancient Egypt. The problem is the execution: the writing leans hard on tired action clichés, the story plods between set pieces, and the effects often look more like a noisy video game cutscene than a convincing world you can sink into. It also carries the uncomfortable baggage of whitewashed casting, which can make the whole “mythic Egypt” premise feel hollow before you even get to the plot. If you can switch your brain off and just want loud spectacle with a few fun performances (Gerard Butler especially chewing scenery), you might get a decent Saturday-night distraction—otherwise, your time is probably better spent elsewhere.
