Belle is clearly trying to be a crowd-pleasing prestige drama that packages a real, important story about race, class, and the law into something accessible, romantic, and emotionally uplifting. The catch is that it often leans on familiar period-piece beats—dowries, courtship politics, and tidy turning points—so if you’re hoping for a thornier, more challenging exploration of slavery’s machinery, it can feel a bit polished and conventional. Some of the heavier material is present (including discrimination and an implied assault), but the film tends to smooth edges rather than sit in discomfort.
