Felony (2014)

Felony is the kind of crime thriller that grabs you not with flashy twists, but with the slow, tightening grip of conscience—watching decent men make one bad choice, then another, until the air in the room feels thin. Matthew Saville directs with a cool, controlled hand, letting silence and glances do as much work as the interrogations, while Joel Edgerton (who also wrote the script) gives the story a bruising moral complexity that lingers long after the credits. The performances—especially Edgerton and Jai Courtney—turn what could’ve been a standard “cover-up” setup into a psychological pressure cooker where every conversation feels like a trap being set. It’s not a comfort watch, and the language is rough, but if you like thrillers where suspense comes from character and consequence rather than gunfights, this one is quietly devastating and hard to shake.

Felony is clearly aiming for a gritty, morally knotted police thriller about how one bad decision can rot everyone involved, and it leans hard into that uneasy, downbeat tone. The problem is it often mistakes grimness for depth: the pacing is sluggish, the script circles its dilemma without landing a truly sharp payoff, and the cynicism can start to feel monotonous rather than suspenseful. Performances from Joel Edgerton and Jai Courtney do some heavy lifting, and there are a few tense, intimate confrontations that work, but don’t expect a twisty mystery or a cathartic resolution. If you like slow-burn character studies where everyone’s compromised, you might be on board; if you want a propulsive thriller with satisfying moral reckoning, this may waste your time.
