Dom Hemingway (2013)
After spending 12 years in prison for keeping his mouth shut, notorious safe-cracker Dom Hemingway is back on the streets of London looking to collect what he's owed.
What people think about Dom Hemingway
Dom Hemingway is the kind of brash, bruised crime comedy that lives and dies on pure personality—and Jude Law delivers one of his most shamelessly enjoyable turns, swaggering through London with the reckless confidence of a man who thinks the world owes him interest. The film crackles with sharp dialogue and a strange, unexpected sweetness beneath the profanity, finding flashes of “gutter poetry” in the spaces between bad decisions and bruised egos. It’s entertaining in that rowdy, late-night way where you’re not always sure whether to wince or laugh, but you can’t look away. If you’re allergic to crude humor or loud, self-sabotaging characters, it may not be your drink—but if you want a refreshingly unvarnished performance and a crime tale with bite, this one earns its buzz.
Dom Hemingway is aiming for a swaggering, foul-mouthed character study of a career criminal crashing back into London with ego, entitlement, and a score to settle. The problem is the movie leans so hard into Dom’s abrasive excesses that the “dark comedy” often plays as noise rather than wit, and if you don’t enjoy spending time with a relentlessly self-destructive lead, it can feel hard to watch. The story itself doesn’t give you much to cling to beyond the performance, so once the shock-and-awe persona stops being novel, the whole thing can start to feel tiresome and oddly familiar. That said, Jude Law commits fully and there are flashes of energy and style, so if you like loud, nasty anti-heroes and can tolerate repetition, you might still get something out of it.
