What people think about Dark Places
Dark Places earns its title the old-fashioned way: by pulling you into a bleak, wintry mood where every memory feels suspect and every new clue comes with a bruise. Charlize Theron gives Libby Day a jagged, lived-in humanity—prickly, exhausted, and stubbornly compelling—while the film’s shifting timelines and rural Kansas grit create an atmosphere you can practically taste. It’s a mystery that doesn’t chase cheap twists so much as it tightens the screws with dread and moral messiness, letting suspense grow out of character and consequence. Fair warning: it’s not a cozy whodunit and it sits in some very ugly places, but if you like your thrillers dark, textured, and performance-driven, this one is worth the trip.
Dark Places wants to be a grim, Southern-Gothic-style true-crime mystery about memory, guilt, and how a childhood tragedy poisons adulthood, and on paper the ingredients are terrific (especially Charlize Theron’s hard-edged, weary lead performance). The problem is the storytelling: it’s chopped into flashbacks and revelations that should feel like tightening screws, but often land as cluttered, convenient twists that drain tension instead of building it. The pacing sits in an awkward middle ground—too slow to be a pulpy thriller, too messy to be a satisfying mystery—so you may find yourself watching the plot happen rather than feeling it. If you like bleak tone, strong actors, and don’t mind a contrived, overstuffed ride, you’ll get something out of it; if you want a clean, smart whodunit with earned surprises, this one will likely test your patience.
