What people think about Anomalisa
Anomalisa is one of those rare films that uses animation not to escape reality, but to pin it to the wall and study it with startling intimacy: a stop-motion romance that feels at once funny, aching, and uncomfortably true. Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson craft a world where sameness becomes a haunting joke, and then, quietly, a heartbreak—until a single unexpected connection cuts through the fog with real tenderness. The vibe is intimate and melancholy with flashes of wit, powered by extraordinary voice work that makes small pauses and awkward silences feel like revelations. It is also candidly adult (explicit sex, nudity, and strong language), and its emotional honesty can sting, but if you’re in the mood for something original and deeply human, it lingers like a song you can’t quite shake.
Anomalisa is trying to turn a midlife emotional crisis into something you can literally see and hear, using stop-motion and a clever voice conceit to make loneliness feel like a trap you can’t talk your way out of. The problem is it’s almost entirely stuck inside one man’s self-absorption, so if you don’t find his misery interesting, it can play like an artsy one-person pity party with a romantic detour rather than a satisfying story. The “wow” factor of the gimmick and the craft is real, but the film’s deliberate, malaise-heavy pacing and faintly misanthropic tone can start to feel repetitive instead of profound. Watch it if you want an intimate, uncomfortable character study that’s more mood than plot; skip it if you’re looking for warmth, likable leads, or a romance that actually feels uplifting (also, be ready for very explicit sexual content).
