Young Rebels (1989)

Young Rebels is the kind of scrappy, gloriously unpolished action oddity that reminds you why late-’80s/early-’90s B-movies still have a pulse: they swing for the fences, miss spectacularly, and somehow land in the end zone anyway. Amir Shervan stages a parade of chases, fistfights, and gunplay with earnest intensity, while Tadashi Yamashita brings a grounded martial-arts presence and Robert Z’Dar looms like a brick wall in villain form. The vibe is loud, cheesy, and proudly over-the-top, the sort of “good-bad” experience where the laughs come from the movie’s straight-faced confidence as much as from its rough edges. It’s not for viewers who want polished craft or restrained content—there’s strong violence, nudity, and plenty of profanity—but if you’re on the fence and in the mood for campy action comfort food, this one goes down easy.

Young Rebels is clearly trying to be a tough, street-level buddy action flick where two partners take down a cartel through nonstop chases, shootouts, and macho one-liners. The problem is that the acting, dialogue, and overall production are so rough that it often plays less like a gritty B-movie and more like a first draft filmed in a hurry, with action scenes that don’t land cleanly and sound/technical issues that pull you out. If you love Amir Shervan-style low-budget oddities and can laugh at stiff performances and clunky staging, Robert Z’Dar’s presence and the sheer commitment to constant conflict may still give you something to enjoy. If you’re hoping for coherent storytelling, well-shot fights, or “so-bad-it’s-good” magic, this one is more likely to test your patience than reward it, and the nudity and severe violence make it a poor casual watch.
