Too Late (2016)

Too Late feels like a modern noir told like a dare: five long, unbroken takes that glide through Los Angeles with the confidence of a great jazz riff, pulling you deeper even as you’re trying to get your bearings. Dennis Hauck’s camera choreography and Bill Fernandez’s smoky cinematography turn back rooms, night streets, and sun-bleached corners into a living mood, while John Hawkes anchors it all with a weary, soulful performance that makes every pause and half-spoken line matter. The story arrives out of order, but the emotions land in order—regret, tenderness, dread—so the mystery isn’t just what happened, it’s what it cost. It’s not for viewers who need tidy plotting or are put off by rough language and flashes of sex and violence, but if you like your crime dramas stylish, intimate, and formally bold, this one lingers like a bruise you can’t stop touching.

Too Late is clearly aiming for a moody, L.A.-noir lament, using long takes and a scrambled timeline to make a missing-woman case feel like a doomed memory you can’t quite put in order. The problem is that the technique often calls attention to itself, and the stylized, ultra-written dialogue can feel more like actors performing “cool” than people talking, which makes the emotional stakes harder to buy. If you’re allergic to movies that prize formal tricks and homage over clean narrative drive and character depth, this will likely test your patience, especially with its heavy profanity, nudity, and bursts of violence. Still, John Hawkes brings real weariness and humanity, and if you enjoy ambitious, talky neo-noir experiments even when they’re a bit self-satisfied, there’s something to admire.
