Scorched Earth (2018)

Scorched Earth is the kind of lean, dust-choked post-apocalyptic thriller that knows exactly what it wants to be: a gritty, B-movie western in sci-fi clothing, powered by Gina Carano’s tough, physical screen presence. Peter Howitt drops you into a world where air hurts, water is currency, and every deal feels like it could turn into a fistfight, and the movie’s scrappy world-building makes that harsh reality oddly immersive. The action is blunt and satisfying—less glossy spectacle, more bruises, grit, and momentum—built around a bounty-hunter vibe that keeps the tension ticking forward. It won’t be for viewers craving prestige sci-fi or subtle character drama, but if you’re in the mood for a divertingly hokey, hard-edged ride with a committed lead and a clear sense of atmosphere, it delivers.

Scorched Earth is clearly aiming for a gritty, Mad Max-meets-western bounty-hunter romp, and Gina Carano has the physical presence to sell the toughness. The problem is the movie feels like it’s running on fumes: familiar plot beats, a thin screenplay, and pacing that drags when it should be snapping forward with tension and momentum. The sets and world-building look serviceable rather than immersive, so the apocalypse never quite feels lived-in, and the action can’t fully compensate for the overall dullness. If you’re mainly here for Carano throwing down and you don’t mind a low-budget, been-there sci-fi western, you might get by; if you want originality, sharp writing, or real energy, this probably isn’t worth your time.
