Malevolent (2018)

Malevolent has a wickedly appealing hook: it starts as a cynical, low-rent con job and slowly lets the supernatural seep in until the ground feels unstable beneath every scene. Olaf de Fleur Johannesson keeps the vibe grim and chilly, using the old-estate setting not just for jump scares but for a creeping sense that something human and awful is buried in the walls. Florence Pugh is the real engine here—she sells fear, doubt, and grit with a conviction that makes the film feel smarter and more emotionally anchored than many haunted-house entries. It’s not for the squeamish given its disturbing themes and flashes of brutality, but if you like horror that begins with a clever premise and tightens into something genuinely unsettling, this one’s worth the candlelight.

Malevolent wants to be a slick “fake mediums meet the real thing” haunted-house thriller, and it does have a solid hook plus an early, gloomy Scottish atmosphere that briefly promises something sharper. The problem is it leans hard on familiar genre beats and often feels oddly subdued, with ghosts that look more like background décor than a genuine threat, so the tension keeps slipping away. When it finally tries to ramp up, the climax can feel clunky rather than cathartic, and the pacing may leave you waiting for scares that don’t really land. If you’re mainly here for Florence Pugh’s presence or you enjoy slow-burn, mild supernatural mysteries, you might get by—but if you want relentless dread, inventive frights, or a fresh take on possession/haunting tropes, this probably isn’t worth your time.
