The Sacrament (2014)

The Sacrament is what happens when found-footage stops being a gimmick and becomes a trapdoor: Ti West uses the “just documenting” premise to pull you into Eden Parish with unnerving intimacy, so the air itself starts to feel watched. It’s a slow, confident burn where the smiles are a little too practiced, the hospitality a little too rehearsed, and every interview seems to reveal one more hairline crack in the utopian façade. West’s clean, purposeful camerawork gives the chaos a chilling plausibility, while the film’s ideas about belief, control, and complicity linger long after the credits. Fair warning: it’s bleak and intense, and if you’re sensitive to violence involving children or real-world parallels, it may be too much—but if you want horror that tightens like a noose, it delivers.

The Sacrament is clearly aiming for a grim, found-footage descent into cult psychology, using a faux-journalism setup to make the danger feel immediate and uncomfortably plausible. The problem is that it often mistakes “shaky realism” for depth, so the early interviews can drag and the characters’ choices may feel more like plot fuel than believable human behavior. When it finally ramps up, it hits hard, but it can also feel blunt and exploitative—especially given how closely it echoes real-world tragedy—so if you want thoughtful insight rather than sensational intensity, this may leave you cold. Still, Ti West builds a tense atmosphere and a few scenes genuinely stick, so it’s worth it only if you’re specifically in the mood for bleak, confrontational horror with minimal catharsis.
