Kaguya-sama: Love Is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends- is that rare romantic comedy that understands the funniest battles are the ones we fight inside our own heads, then turns those anxieties into both sharp laughs and unexpectedly tender truth. Mamoru Hatakeyama keeps the series’ kinetic visual wit alive—playful editing, expressive animation, and perfectly timed gags—while letting the story breathe long enough for Kaguya and Shirogane’s pride, insecurity, and genuine longing to feel achingly human. The voice performances are a delight, selling every overthought pause and emotional swerve, and the film’s vibe glides from champagne-bubbly comedy to sincere, wince-worthy vulnerability without ever feeling like a tonal betrayal. If you prefer straightforward romances, the constant mind games may test your patience, but if you like love stories that earn their sweetness through character and comedy, this is a hugely satisfying next step.

This movie is trying to take the series’ battle-of-wits romance and finally deal with the messy “okay, what are we now?” fallout after the big kiss, leaning harder into character feelings than pure gag warfare. The catch is that it can feel like an extended epilogue: lots of internal spiraling, miscommunication, and looping anxiety that may test your patience if you wanted constant punchlines or major plot progression. It’s also very much not a stand-alone experience—if you aren’t already invested in Kaguya and Shirogane, the emotional nuances and callbacks won’t land nearly as well. If you are a fan, though, the voice acting is sharp, the comedy still pops in bursts, and the film gives the relationship a more honest, human texture instead of pretending one romantic moment solves everything.
