Short Term 12 (2013)

Short Term 12 is one of those rare dramas that feels less like a “movie about issues” and more like a window into real lives—messy, funny in unexpected flashes, and quietly heroic in the way people keep showing up for each other. Destin Daniel Cretton directs with a steady, unsentimental compassion, letting the foster-care facility breathe as a lived-in world where small gestures matter, and where pain doesn’t get polished into melodrama. At the center, Brie Larson gives a performance of startling openness: tough, tender, and gradually unguarded, anchored by an ensemble (especially John Gallagher Jr. and Kaitlyn Dever) that makes every interaction feel earned. It’s not an easy watch—its themes can hit hard—but if you’re on the fence, know this: it’s ultimately a humane, cathartic film that believes in the possibility of healing without pretending it’s simple.

Short Term 12 is clearly aiming for an intimate, compassionate look at foster care work and the way trauma echoes across generations, and it often lands thanks to raw, natural performances (Brie Larson in particular is quietly devastating). But it also asks you to buy into a few plot turns and emotional beats that can feel a bit engineered, and the final stretch may strike you as too tidy or conveniently cathartic for material this messy. If you’re sensitive to depictions and discussions of child abuse, self-harm, and suicide, this isn’t a “sad but safe” drama—it can hit hard and linger.
