Sweetwater (2023)
In 1990 Chicago, a taxi driver recounts to his passenger, a sportswriter, his life story. He reveals himself to be Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, one of the first African Americans to play in the NBA.
What people think about Sweetwater
Sweetwater earns its place by treating a sports milestone not as trivia, but as a lived, hard-won human story—one told with the intimate pull of a late-night cab ride and the sweep of a bygone Chicago and New York. Everett Osborne brings Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton to life with quiet charisma and steel, while the film’s handsome cinematography and period texture make the era feel tangible rather than museum-staged. The tone is warm and uplifting without pretending the road was easy, acknowledging the racial realities and personal bruises that came with breaking a barrier. If you want wall-to-wall game action, it may feel more like a character-driven tribute than a sports thriller, but if you’re open to an inspiring drama about dignity, talent, and history changing in real time, it’s an easy recommendation.
Sweetwater is clearly trying to honor Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton’s barrier-breaking NBA moment and package it as an uplifting, old-school sports biopic with a framing device and lots of period polish. The problem is it often feels like it’s hitting pre-approved beats rather than digging into a lived-in character, with pacing that can drift and dialogue that lands a bit cheesy and on-the-nose. If you’re hoping for the emotional specificity and grit of a truly great civil-rights-era sports drama, this may come off hollow and overly predictable. Still, if you simply want a clean, PG-13 inspirational story about an important figure in basketball history and you’re not picky about depth, it might do the job for a low-stakes watch.
