Varsity Blood (2014)

Varsity Blood is the kind of scrappy, crowd-pleasing slasher that knows exactly what it’s doing: it bottles the rowdy, neon-flavored spirit of ’80s horror and pours it over a Halloween party gone very, very wrong. The remote farmhouse setting feels like an invitation to bad decisions, and the film leans into that vibe with a brisk pace, a memorable mascot-clad killer, and gore that’s more gleeful than grim. If you miss the days when slashers were about creative kills, simple pleasures, and cheering with friends at the screen, this one delivers. It won’t convert viewers who need deep characterization or subtlety, but for genre fans, it’s a fun, bloody throwback worth the ticket.

Varsity Blood is clearly aiming for a back-to-basics Halloween slasher: obnoxious teens, a remote farmhouse, and a mascot-costumed killer picking them off one by one. The problem is the execution feels bargain-bin, with stiff acting, muddy or hard-to-follow dialogue, and direction that rarely builds tension or style. Pacing drags and the characters are so thinly sketched that it’s tough to care who lives or dies, which makes the whole thing feel kind of pointless. If you love low-rent, “so bad it’s funny” horror and don’t mind a generic body-count setup, you might get some mindless fun out of it; otherwise, it’s an easy skip.
