Ragnarok (2013)

Ragnarok is the kind of old-fashioned, crowd-pleasing adventure that remembers the simple thrill of smart people chasing a mystery into wild country—and then discovering they’re not alone out there. It marries Viking lore to modern exploration with a Spielberg-ish snap, letting Norway’s stark, gorgeous landscapes do half the storytelling while the other half comes from brisk pacing and well-timed suspense. Pål Sverre Hagen anchors it with a grounded, human energy that keeps the film feeling like a family quest rather than a hollow creature-feature, even when the tone turns ominous and the jump scares start to land. If you want a grim, myth-heavy epic you may find it too playful and accessible, but if you’re on the fence about a lean, entertaining monster-adventure, this one earns its keep.

Ragnarok is clearly aiming for a family-friendly Nordic adventure that mixes archaeology, Viking lore, and a creature-feature chase into one accessible package. The problem is it plays like a greatest-hits remix of better “expedition goes wrong” movies, with familiar beats, predictable turns, and mythology that feels more like set dressing than something genuinely eerie or fresh. If you’re hoping for bold world-building, inventive action, or a truly distinctive monster movie, this may feel competent but oddly anonymous. Still, the Norwegian landscapes and the straightforward, PG-13-friendly thrills can make it a decent pick if you just want an undemanding weekend adventure with a dark tone and a few jump scares.
