Live by Night (2016)

Live by Night is the kind of lush, old-fashioned crime saga Hollywood doesn’t make often anymore: a Prohibition-era rise-and-fall story that sweeps from hard-edged Boston streets to sunlit Florida, where the heat feels like it’s baking the morals right out of the air. Ben Affleck directs with a confident, classical touch, staging violent turns and quiet reckonings with the same painterly control, while the cinematography and production design give every nightclub, backroom, and sidewalk showdown a lived-in, seductive glow. The performances keep it grounded—Affleck’s weary outlaw at the center, with strong supporting work (especially Elle Fanning) that adds bite and ache to the world around him. It’s not for viewers who want a lean, single-track thriller—this one sprawls and gets busy—but if you’re in the mood for atmosphere, ambition, and a gangster tale told with genuine craft, it’s an easy film to sink into.

Live by Night is clearly aiming for a classy, old-school gangster epic, trading on Prohibition glamour, moral decay, and a man trying to outrun his own choices. The problem is it plays like three movies crammed into one: the plot keeps piling on new factions and detours, so the pacing sags and the emotional beats don’t land with the punch it wants. If you loved Affleck’s tighter crime work and want the same urgency and sharp storytelling, this may feel polished but oddly lifeless and familiar. Still, the period look is handsome, the cast is doing solid work, and if you’re happy to just soak in noir vibes and violence without needing a lean, propulsive story, you might get enough out of it.
