Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013)

Ramaiya Vastavaiya is the kind of old-school Bollywood romance that wears its heart on its sleeve and makes you glad it does—bright colors, big feelings, and songs that arrive like emotional punctuation marks rather than interruptions. Prabhu Deva takes a familiar “city boy meets village girl” setup and stages it with a crowd-pleasing confidence, balancing comedy and action with a sincere tenderness for the rural world and the pride that comes with it. What really gives the film its staying power is the supporting cast, especially Sonu Sood, who brings real gravitas to the protective-brother role and grounds the melodrama in something human. If you’re allergic to heightened emotions and unabashed sentiment, it may feel too traditional, but if you want a sweeping, glossy, comfort-food romance with a sturdy moral spine, this one goes down easy.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya is clearly aiming for old-school Bollywood comfort food: a glossy NRI-meets-village-girl romance with comedy, family drama, and a few action beats to keep the pot boiling. The problem is it’s built almost entirely from familiar tropes, so if you’ve seen a couple of these “prove your love by suffering in the countryside” stories, you’ll feel the gears turning a mile away. Girish Kumar’s central performance doesn’t always sell the charm or transformation the plot depends on, which makes the whole star-launch intent feel more like wishful thinking than payoff. Still, Shruti Haasan brings some warmth and the rural set pieces have a breezy, crowd-pleasing energy—just don’t come in expecting anything fresh or subtle.
