Haunter (2013)

Haunter takes the well-worn haunted-house setup and snaps it into a clever, melancholy puzzle box, where the scares come as much from realization as from shadows. Vincenzo Natali (who’s always been allergic to the obvious) gives the time-loop premise a ghostly, wintry mood and a visual clarity that makes every “repeat” feel newly unsettling, not just recycled. Abigail Breslin anchors it with a grounded, human performance that keeps the film invested in character and consequence, even when the supernatural mechanics start tightening like a noose. It isn’t a splatter-fest—more eerie and idea-driven with a few jolts—so if you want relentless gore you may be underfed, but if you like horror that thinks while it creeps, this one sticks.

Haunter wants to be a moody, clever twist on the haunted-house story, mixing a time-loop mystery with a teenage coming-of-awareness arc, and you can feel Vincenzo Natali aiming for something more thoughtful than cheap shocks. The problem is the movie’s rules never quite lock into place, so instead of tension building, you may find yourself questioning the logic and waiting for a payoff that doesn’t fully land. The low-budget limitations also show in ways that make the big ideas feel smaller than they should, even when the atmosphere is trying hard to sell the unease. If you like slow-burn supernatural puzzles and can forgive fuzzy internal mechanics, Abigail Breslin’s grounded presence and the film’s chilly vibe might be enough; if you need tight plotting and satisfying answers, this will likely frustrate you.
