Beneath (2013)

Beneath is the kind of lean, nasty little horror movie that understands a simple setup can be a pressure cooker: a calm lake, a tiny rowboat, and the growing certainty that the water wants you dead. Larry Fessenden wrings real tension out of cramped space and bad options, letting the fear seep in through atmosphere as much as shocks, until every splash feels like a countdown. What makes it stick isn’t just the creature threat, but the way it turns survival into a moral vise, forcing characters (and you) to feel the weight of each decision. If you’re looking for big-budget spectacle or deep character backstory, this may feel spare, but if you want a creepy, claustrophobic ride that keeps tightening the screws, it’s a surprisingly effective watch.

Beneath is clearly aiming for a lean, nasty little survival horror where teen drama and a simple “who gets sacrificed” dilemma fuel the tension on an isolated lake. The problem is the script is thin and the characters are often so abrasive you may find yourself rooting for the fish, which makes the moral stakes feel more irritating than gripping. Add in murky, overly dark visuals and a creature concept that’s more eye-rolling than terrifying, and it starts to feel like a derivative riff on better aquatic horror without the atmosphere to sell it. If you can enjoy schlocky, mean-spirited B-movie thrills and don’t need believable people or a convincing monster, there are a few tense moments to latch onto, but most viewers will want to spend their time elsewhere.
