The Gallows (2015)

The Gallows works best when it leans into that deliciously uneasy idea that a familiar place—a high school auditorium, dusty curtains, half-lit hallways—can turn hostile after hours. Shot with a scrappy immediacy that makes the silence feel loud, it builds a grim, claustrophobic atmosphere where every creak and shadow seems to carry a memory it shouldn’t. The scares come in sharp, well-timed jolts and lingering dread rather than elaborate spectacle, and it knows how to leave you with an ending that sticks like a bad thought. If you’re allergic to found-footage style or want deep character drama, it may not convert you—but if you’re on the fence and craving a lean, creepy thrill ride, it’s better than its reputation suggests.

The Gallows is clearly aiming for a lean, found-footage haunted-school thrill ride, using the “cursed play” setup to build dread and claustrophobia. The problem is it feels engineered rather than earned: the plot lurches from one convenient beat to the next, the shaky, dim visuals can be more irritating than immersive, and the scares lean heavily on familiar found-footage tricks you’ve seen done better. Add in characters who are hard to root for and a predictably mapped-out escalation, and it’s easy to feel like you’re watching noise instead of tension. If you’re a die-hard found-footage completist or just want a quick, low-effort jolt, it might pass the time, but if you need originality, atmosphere, or smart horror, this probably isn’t for you.
