Wild (2014)
A woman with a tragic past decides to start her new life by hiking for one thousand miles on the Pacific Crest Trail.
What people think about Wild
Wild is the rare drama that turns a solitary hike into something bracingly cinematic: a rugged, wind-in-your-face journey where every blister and mile feels like a sentence in a hard-won confession. Jean-Marc Vallée directs with a quiet, unshowy confidence, letting the landscape and the memories speak in the same breath, while Reese Witherspoon gives a performance so raw and present you can almost feel the weight of that pack on your own shoulders. The film’s power comes from how honestly it connects physical endurance to grief and self-reckoning, with Laura Dern providing a warm, luminous counterpoint that deepens the emotional pull. It’s not an easy watch—there’s explicit sex, addiction, and heavy personal trauma—but if you’re open to a sincere, ultimately life-affirming story about surviving yourself, it’s absolutely worth the miles.
Wild is clearly aiming for a tough-but-uplifting portrait of a woman clawing her way back from grief and self-destruction by taking on an absurdly hard hike, and Jean-Marc Vallée shoots the trail with a grounded, lived-in beauty. The catch is that the film often packages something messy and deeply personal into a fairly conventional “healing journey,” with flashbacks that can feel like they’re smoothing the sharp edges instead of digging into them. If you want a more psychologically jagged, unpredictable character study, you may find the storytelling a bit uneven and the message too neat for the subject matter. Still, Reese Witherspoon is fully committed, Laura Dern brings real warmth, and if you’re in the mood for a reflective, endurance-as-therapy drama (with heavy adult content), it can land.
