Reasonable Doubt (2014)
When up-and-coming District Attorney Mitch Brockden commits a fatal hit-and-run, he feels compelled to throw the case against the accused criminal who was found with the body and blamed for the crime. Following the trial, Mitch's worst fears come true when he realizes that he acquitted a guilty man, and he soon finds himself on the hunt for the killer before more victims pile up.
What people think about Reasonable Doubt
Reasonable Doubt hooks you with a deliciously uneasy premise: a rising prosecutor makes one terrible mistake and then has to live inside the lie he built to protect himself. Peter Howitt keeps the story moving with a brisk, no-nonsense pace, letting the tension tighten scene by scene as guilt, ambition, and public duty collide in the same courtroom-ready mind. Dominic Cooper plays the kind of polished professional you can believe would gamble everything on control, while Samuel L. Jackson brings a hard-edged gravity that keeps every encounter feeling like it could tip into danger. It’s a familiar-style crime thriller—gritty, violent, and unapologetically R-rated—but if you like your suspense lean, urgent, and morally thorny, it’s an easy watch to get pulled into.
Reasonable Doubt is clearly aiming for a gritty moral-choices thriller: a prosecutor makes one terrible mistake, then tries to “fix” it before the damage spreads. The problem is the script leans hard on coincidence and familiar twists, so even with a brisk pace you can often see the turns coming, and the escalation starts to feel more silly than suspenseful. Samuel L. Jackson brings some bite and presence, and there are a few tense moments that almost sell the premise, but the character logic and courtroom/crime mechanics don’t hold up under scrutiny. If you like sleek, believable legal thrillers, this will likely irritate you; if you just want a fast, pulpy cat-and-mouse with R-rated violence and don’t mind generic plotting, it may do the job.
