I (2015)
A deformed hunchback kidnaps a bride and holds her hostage while his connection to her and his targets is revealed in a series of flashbacks that unfold as he starts seeking revenge.
What people think about I
What makes I so hard to shake is the sheer audacity of its filmmaking: Shankar turns a tale of love, betrayal, and payback into a lavish fever dream where every frame feels engineered to dazzle. Vikram’s performance is the anchor—physically fearless and emotionally raw—carrying you through glamour, tenderness, and a darker edge without ever letting the film feel hollow, while Amy Jackson brings a steady warmth that keeps the romance from getting lost in the spectacle. The vibe swings from glossy fashion-world fantasy to pulpy, operatic thriller, with action staged like visual set pieces and music that doesn’t just accompany the scenes—it supercharges them. It’s undeniably big, melodramatic, and longer than it needs to be, but if you’re on the fence and want a high-voltage commercial entertainer that looks and sounds expensive, this one delivers.
Shankar’s I is clearly aiming for a glossy, operatic mash-up of romance, revenge thriller, and larger-than-life action, with Vikram throwing himself into a physically demanding role and the film delivering plenty of high-budget spectacle. The problem is the screenplay often feels like it’s sprinting between set pieces instead of building believable characters, so the emotional beats can land with a thud. It’s also very long and frequently cartoonish in tone, which makes the twists and payoffs feel more predictable than shocking. If you love maximalist Tamil cinema, extreme transformations, and don’t mind logic taking a backseat to style, you’ll find things to enjoy—but if you’re after tight writing, subtle performances, or a grounded thriller, this will test your patience.
