Jessabelle is the kind of haunted-house thriller that earns its chills less through jump scares than through a thick, humid Louisiana-bayou mood you can almost feel on your skin. It folds voodoo folklore and eerie VHS fragments into its dread in a way that feels specific and personal, giving the supernatural an unsettling texture instead of generic ghost-story wallpaper. Sarah Snook anchors the film with a raw, committed performance that makes the melodrama land as bruised emotion rather than soapiness, so the scares have something human to cling to. It won’t convert viewers who need airtight plotting or subtlety, but if you’re in the mood for a moody, oddball Southern Gothic with a distinctive sting, this one’s easy to recommend.

Jessabelle is clearly aiming for a Southern Gothic haunted-house chiller about grief, family secrets, and a woman forced back into a decaying home where the past won’t stay buried. The problem is it leans hard on familiar possession/ghost tropes, with plot turns that feel more recycled than revealing, and the scares often land with a thud rather than a jolt. Some story beats come off muddled, and there are elements that can read as uncomfortable or insensitive, which may pull you out of the atmosphere instead of deepening it. If you’re craving fresh horror or genuinely tense set pieces, you’ll likely be disappointed, but if you can tolerate clichés for a moody, swampy vibe and a few solid moments of dread, you might get just enough to coast through.
