Paranormal Island (2014)

Paranormal Island has a wonderfully pulpy hook: a century-old bar sitting alone in the middle of a lake, the kind of location that feels like a dare, and it leans into that isolated, after-hours dread with a straight face. The movie’s pleasures come from its simple, effective setup—young bartenders, one missed boat, and a night that turns the familiar into something hostile—letting the creeping atmosphere do most of the work. Briana Evigan makes an agreeable anchor as the tension tightens, and the cast’s fair, adequate performances keep the story moving without winking at the camera. If you’re looking for elevated, subtle horror you may find it a bit direct, but if you want a compact, haunted-night thriller with a classic campfire vibe, it’s an easy ticket.

Paranormal Island is clearly aiming for a classic “stranded overnight in a haunted location” thriller, with a fun hook in the floating-lake bar setting and a simple setup that could’ve delivered solid tension. The problem is the execution: the story feels thin and repetitive, the pacing drifts into long stretches where not much happens, and the scares rarely land because the effects and staging look too cheap to sell the threat. If you need tight writing, escalating dread, or memorable horror set pieces, this will likely feel dull and a bit embarrassing rather than scary. Still, if you’re the type who enjoys low-budget, so-bad-it’s-curious horror and can laugh along with the rough edges, the premise might be enough to carry you for a night in.
