The Liar and His Lover is the kind of swoony music romance that understands how songs can say what people can’t, pairing a backstage view of the industry with the bright, open-hearted thrill of first love. Director Norihiro Koizumi gives the film an easy, melodic flow—part starry-eyed teen dream, part bittersweet showbiz fable—while the performances (especially Sakurako Ohara’s naturally luminous presence and voice) make the emotions feel sung rather than spoken. Takeru Satoh brings a gentle, wounded charm to Aki, a man hiding in plain sight, and the movie finds real poignancy in the push-pull between sincerity and self-protection without turning cynical. It’s not for everyone—some viewers may be uneasy with the age gap premise—but if you can meet it where it is, you’ll likely come away humming, smiling, and a little wistful about the cost of keeping your heart unguarded.

The Liar and His Lover wants to be a sweet, music-soaked coming-of-age romance about creativity, honesty, and the cost of chasing a debut. The problem is the central relationship (a 25-year-old with a 16-year-old) can feel uncomfortable no matter how gently the film frames it, and the “hidden identity” drama is pretty predictable if you’ve seen a few idol romances. It also leans hard into glossy wish-fulfillment and industry fairy-tale beats, so if you’re looking for realism or emotional complexity, you may find it thin. That said, the songs and performances have charm, and if you’re in the mood for a clean, sentimental J-pop-style romance and can accept the premise, it can be an easy watch.
