Contracted (2013)

Contracted is the kind of horror-thriller that gets under your skin because it treats its nightmare like an illness you can’t look away from—slow, intimate, and brutally inevitable. Eric England builds a grimy, anxious atmosphere where every ordinary interaction feels contaminated, and Najarra Townsend commits so fully to Samantha’s unraveling that the film becomes less a monster movie than a front-row seat to something tragically, grotesquely human. The imagery is unapologetically nasty in that classic body-horror way—cringe-inducing, queasy, and strangely mesmerizing—yet it’s anchored by a steady sense of dread rather than cheap shocks. Fair warning: it’s severe, graphic, and rooted in sexual violence, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want horror that’s fearless, unsettling, and performed with real conviction, this one delivers.

Contracted is clearly aiming for a grim, no-escape body-horror spiral that uses infection as a metaphor for violation, shame, and losing control, and it commits to that unpleasantness without blinking. The problem is it often mistakes “more disgusting” for “more meaningful,” piling on gore and genital-focused deterioration while giving you fairly thin characters and not much emotional or thematic payoff beyond the gross-out. It’s also built around sexual assault, so if you’re looking for horror that feels cathartic or fun, this is more likely to feel punishing and mean-spirited than thrilling. That said, Najarra Townsend throws herself into the role and the practical effects are memorably nasty, so if you specifically want an oppressive, sleazy descent into rot, it may hit the exact note you’re after.
