Berlin, I Love You is at its best when it treats the city like a living instrument—each vignette a different note, from wistful street-corner intimacy to playful, almost fantastical bursts of romance that feel like they could only happen in Berlin. Because it’s an anthology, you don’t watch it for one sweeping plot so much as for the scattered pleasures: a charming dance-like interlude here, a surprisingly effective little thriller there, and the gentle throughline of two performers finding connection amid the noise. The vibe is warm, slightly dreamy, and pleasantly cosmopolitan, carried by a game cast and a handful of genuinely delightful sequences that linger after the credits. It’s not for everyone—some segments land better than others—but if you enjoy mosaic-style love stories and the idea of falling for a city as much as for the people in it, this is an easy film to spend an evening with.

Berlin, I Love You is clearly aiming for a warm, city-sized love letter: ten bite-size romances stitched together with a recurring street-performer thread, hoping Berlin’s vibe will do some of the emotional heavy lifting. The problem is the segments are wildly uneven and often feel like first drafts—thin characters, rushed payoffs, and a tone that drifts from cute to heavy without earning either. Even when an idea sounds intriguing (like the suicidal guy “saved” by a car’s voice system), the execution can come off gimmicky rather than moving, so the whole thing starts to feel aimless and longer than it is. If you enjoy anthology films as casual postcards and don’t mind a few duds for the sake of an occasional sweet moment and some Berlin scenery, you might find something to like; if you want a genuinely romantic, well-written drama, this is likely to disappoint.
