Hellboy (2019)
Hellboy comes to England, where he must defeat Nimue, Merlin's consort and the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.
What people think about Hellboy
Hellboy (2019) is special because it refuses to sand down its edges: it’s a splattery, heavy-metal fairy tale that treats the Hellboy mythos like a horror-comic fever dream instead of a polite superhero product. Neil Marshall leans into grotesque creature design, nasty surprises, and brisk, brawling action, while David Harbour plays the big red bruiser with bruised-heart humor—equal parts weary wisecracks and genuine loneliness. The vibe is loud, grimy, and gleefully excessive, with witches, giants, and occult oddities crashing into each other like panels from a pulp nightmare brought to life. It’s not for everyone—especially if you’re squeamish or want a cleaner, more elegant fantasy—but if you’re in the mood for R-rated monster mayhem with personality, it delivers with a wicked grin.
Hellboy (2019) is clearly trying to be a louder, nastier, R-rated comic-book brawler with folklore horror and end-of-the-world stakes, and on paper that’s a solid lane for the character. The problem is it plays like three movies shoved into one: frantic pacing, messy exposition, and action that often feels more noisy than thrilling, with gore so constant it stops having impact. If you loved the moody charm and clean storytelling of the earlier Hellboy films, this one’s likely to feel like a grimy reboot that confuses “edgy” with “engaging.” That said, David Harbour brings real effort and a bruised-soul vibe, and there are flashes of fun creature ideas—just not enough coherence to make the ride consistently worth your time.
