4 Moons (2014)

What makes 4 Moons special is its quiet confidence: it treats queer love not as a headline, but as a fact of life, then lets the messy, tender, funny human parts take center stage. Sergio Tovar Velarde interweaves four very different stories with a calm, humane touch, finding humor and aching vulnerability in the same breath as his characters wrestle with secrecy, longing, and the courage it takes to accept themselves. The vibe is intimate and unshowy—more like eavesdropping on real lives than watching a melodrama—so the emotions land with surprising force. It’s also frank about sex (including full frontal nudity and graphic encounters), so it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re open to an honest, compassionate romance-drama, it’s the kind of film that leaves you feeling a little more understanding and a little more hopeful.

4 Moons is clearly trying to be a heartfelt, multi-perspective look at gay love, secrecy, and self-acceptance across different ages, and its ambition is admirable. The problem is that the interwoven structure can feel more like a checklist of situations than fully lived-in stories, with relationship dynamics that often come off messy in a way that’s more uncomfortable than illuminating. The explicit sexual content and nudity aren’t coy or fleeting, so if you’re not up for graphic encounters or morally thorny scenarios (including an older man’s obsession with a sex worker), this will likely feel punishing rather than provocative. If you can handle blunt material and want an earnest, sometimes raw snapshot of desire and shame, there are moments of honesty here—but don’t expect polished storytelling or consistently nuanced character work.
