The Apology (2022)

The Apology is the kind of small, sharp thriller that turns one snowbound house into a pressure cooker of grief, guilt, and reckoning, and it grabs you less with jump scares than with the slow tightening of a vise. Anna Gunn and Linus Roache bring a raw, lived-in intensity to every exchange, letting the dialogue do the cutting as old wounds are prodded and new ones open in real time. Director Alison Locke makes terrific use of the confined setting, building dread through silence, proximity, and the awful sense that there’s nowhere to step back and breathe. It’s grim and emotionally heavy—especially with its missing-child anguish—so it may not be a cozy holiday watch, but if you like character-driven suspense that burns rather than explodes, it’s hard to look away.

The Apology is aiming for a tight, snowed-in holiday thriller where grief, addiction recovery, and long-buried secrets collide in a nasty little battle of wills. When it works, it’s thanks to committed performances—Anna Gunn in particular sells the exhaustion and rage—and the contained setting gives it a tense, stage-play vibe. But the film’s big reveals don’t land with the punch they’re clearly going for, and the second half drags as the story stretches toward a finale that can feel more prolonged than satisfying. If you want sharp writing, strong character depth, and a payoff that clicks into place, this may test your patience; if you’re okay with a slower, actor-driven revenge chamber piece, it’s passable.
