Zulu (2013)
As a child, Ali Neuman narrowly escaped being murdered by Inkhata, a militant political party at war with Nelson Mandela's African National Congress. Only he and his mother survived the carnage of those years. But as with many survivors, the psychological scars remain.
What people think about Zulu
Zulu is the kind of crime thriller that doesn’t just chase danger through dark streets—it makes the city itself feel like a haunted witness, and that’s what gives the film its bruising power. Jérôme Salle stages Cape Town with a gritty, lived-in intensity, then anchors the tension in two compelling performances: Forest Whitaker brings a quiet, aching gravity, while Orlando Bloom plays against expectation with a restless edge that keeps the partnership sharp. The vibe is hard-edged and unsettling, more interested in moral fallout than slick heroics, as the investigation pulls them deeper into a world where the past never stays buried. It’s not for viewers looking for comfort or clean catharsis, but if you want a tough, atmospheric thriller with real emotional weight, Zulu earns your attention.
Zulu is clearly aiming for a grim, socially charged crime thriller that ties a murder investigation to South Africa’s lingering political trauma, and it commits hard to that bleak mood. The problem is it often feels like two movies fighting each other: a grounded detective story on one side and a pulpy conspiracy thriller on the other, with the tonal whiplash making the stakes feel more manufactured than earned. It’s also heavy on brutality and psychological damage, so if you’re not up for harsh violence and relentlessly dark subject matter, this will feel punishing rather than gripping. That said, Forest Whitaker brings real weight and humanity, and the Cape Town atmosphere is striking—just don’t expect a tight, satisfying mystery so much as a dour descent into uglier corners of the world.
