Miss You Already is that rare tearjerker that earns its emotions the hard way: through the messy, funny, occasionally selfish truth of a lifelong friendship rather than tidy inspirational speeches. Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore feel like people who’ve known each other forever, sparring and clinging and laughing at the worst possible moments, and Catherine Hardwicke keeps the film moving with a scrappy, lived-in energy that makes even the heavy scenes feel immediate instead of manufactured. It’s candid about bodies, fear, sex, and the way big life milestones don’t politely take turns, which gives the story a bracing realism alongside its warmth. Fair warning: if you want illness handled at a safe distance, this one gets close—but if you’re open to a comedy-drama that can crack you up and then quietly devastate you, it’s deeply worth the time.

Miss You Already is aiming for a big, tear-soaked ode to lifelong friendship under the pressure of illness, and you can feel the intention to be honest, messy, and life-affirming. The problem is it often pushes so hard for emotion that it starts to feel engineered—swerving between cheeky comedy and heavy tragedy in a way that can come off tonally wobbly and a bit manipulative. Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette are both watchable and there are a few genuinely warm, funny beats, but the friendship sometimes plays more like a screenplay insisting you feel something than two people you fully believe. If you’re sensitive to cancer-story melodrama, medical detail, or films that lean on sentiment over subtlety, this may be more draining than cathartic.
