Rebecca (2020)
After a whirlwind romance with a wealthy widower, a naïve bride moves to his family estate but can't escape the haunting shadow of his late wife.
What people think about Rebecca
Rebecca (2020) is the kind of glossy, candlelit gothic romance that sweeps you into a world of ocean air, whispered gossip, and a mansion that feels like it’s watching you back. Ben Wheatley leans into the story’s seductive unease, letting the mystery and emotional turbulence coil together as Lily James makes the new Mrs. de Winter’s insecurity feel heartbreakingly human, while Kristin Scott Thomas turns Mrs. Danvers into an icily magnetic force you can’t look away from. The film is ravishing to watch—costumes, corridors, and candlelight all doing their share of storytelling—and it moves with the easy momentum of a classic page-turner. If you’re devoted to Hitchcock’s 1940 version you may find yourself comparing, but if you want a faithful, handsomely mounted, melodramatic thriller with real atmosphere and committed performances, this one is an inviting trip back to Manderley.
Rebecca (2020) is clearly aiming for glossy, old-school gothic romance with a creeping sense of dread, and on a surface level it delivers: the costumes are lush, Manderley looks gorgeous, and Kristin Scott Thomas gives the kind of icy performance the story needs. The problem is it often feels like it’s politely reenacting a classic rather than unsettling you, so the mystery and menace land softer than they should and the emotional undercurrents can feel oddly hollow. Lily James brings sincerity, but the central relationship doesn’t always generate the heat or danger required to make the obsession and paranoia convincing. If you want a moody, psychologically sharp thriller with real bite, this may feel too tasteful and conventional; if you’re up for a handsome, watchable period melodrama, it’ll do the job.
