The Love Punch (2014)
Retirement at last! Middle-aged and divorced, company owner Richard Jones is looking forward to a worry-free existence as he arrives at his office on his last day of work. Much to his dismay, he discovers that the management buyout of his company was fraudulent. The company is now bankrupt and the employee pension fund — including his own — has been embezzled. Enlisting the help of his ex-wife Kate, Richard sets out to track down the shady businessman behind the fraud.
What people think about The Love Punch
The Love Punch is the kind of breezy, grown-up caper that reminds you how much fun it is to watch two smart, seasoned actors flirt, bicker, and improvise their way through trouble. Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson have a lived-in chemistry that turns every exchange into a little spark, and the film’s lighthearted tone makes its midlife misfortune feel less like doom and more like a mischievous second chance. It’s charming, amiable escapism—more warm chuckles and playful momentum than big belly laughs—built around the satisfying pleasure of seeing ordinary people get daring when life corners them. If you want something frothy, funny, and easy to enjoy without asking too much of you, this is a lovely way to spend an evening; if you’re craving sharp-edged satire or high-stakes intensity, it may feel a bit too gentle.
The Love Punch is clearly aiming for a breezy, grown-up caper where an ex-couple rekindles chemistry while pulling a slick bit of revenge, and on paper that’s a fun pitch. In practice, the plot lumbers from beat to beat with a predictable, low-stakes feel, and the tone wobbles between light comedy and half-hearted drama without landing a satisfying punchline. It also wastes a talented cast on material that’s too simplistic to generate real tension or memorable laughs. If you’re craving a sharp, inventive heist or genuinely funny romantic sparks, you’ll likely be bored—but if you just want a mild, undemanding Sunday-afternoon watch with a few charming moments, it may do the job.
