Some Velvet Morning (2013)

Some Velvet Morning is the kind of lean, nerve-jangling two-hander that reminds you how thrilling a movie can be when it’s just great actors, a confined space, and dialogue that cuts like glass. Neil LaBute stages the entire encounter in a Brooklyn rowhouse in real time, letting Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve circle each other with charm, menace, and aching vulnerability, until every pause feels loaded and every line sounds like it has a second meaning. The vibe is intimate and theatrical—part psychological sparring match, part slow-tightening vise—and it’s packed with the sort of provocative turns that beg for conversation afterward. It isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re sensitive to intense sexual material and emotional brutality, but if you like challenging dramas that trust performance over spectacle, this one sticks to your ribs.

Some Velvet Morning is trying to be a tight, real-time two-hander: a pressure-cooker psychological drama where power, desire, and resentment get stripped down to raw nerve inside one apartment. The problem is that it can feel like Neil LaBute on autopilot—talky, bitter, and deliberately punishing, with characters who are more weapons in an argument than fully lived-in people. If you’re sensitive to sexual violence (even when framed as part of the film’s conceit) or you need emotional complexity rather than provocation, this will likely feel thin and unpleasant rather than daring. That said, Tucci and Eve commit hard, and if you enjoy stage-play intensity and confrontational dialogue, you may appreciate it as an acting showcase even when the writing doesn’t quite earn the misery.
