Don Jon (2013)

Don Jon is a rom-com that actually has teeth: it’s funny, fast, and sharply observed, but it’s also brave enough to look at how fantasy—movies, porn, the whole cultural script—can quietly sabotage real intimacy. Joseph Gordon-Levitt directs with surprising confidence, giving the film a punchy New Jersey rhythm while letting the story deepen into something unexpectedly tender, and the performances crackle—Scarlett Johansson is magnetic and incisive, while Julianne Moore brings a disarming warmth that changes the movie’s emotional temperature. The vibe is raunchy and R-rated on purpose, using blunt comedy and candid sexuality to make its point rather than to merely shock, and when it hits its sincere notes, it earns them. If explicit sexual content is a dealbreaker it won’t be for you, but if you want a smart, heartfelt twist on the romance formula that respects your intelligence, it’s absolutely worth the watch.

Don Jon is trying to be a punchy, modern morality tale about how porn, fantasy, and rom-com expectations can wreck real intimacy, and it deserves some credit for tackling that head-on. The problem is it hammers its point with the subtlety of a foghorn: the dialogue can feel on-the-nose, the structure gets repetitive, and characters sometimes come off more like delivery systems for the message than fully lived-in people. It’s also aggressively R-rated with constant sexual content, so if you’re not comfortable with explicit scenes and blunt talk, you’ll be checking your watch fast. Still, Gordon-Levitt has energy, Johansson is convincingly controlling, and Julianne Moore brings actual warmth and texture—just don’t expect nuance so much as a very clear lecture dressed up as a rom-com-drama.
