Hunter Hunter (2020)
A fur trapper leaves his wife and daughter behind to kill a rogue wolf in the remote wilderness, but they soon become increasingly worried when their peaceful existence is disrupted.
What people think about Hunter Hunter
Hunter Hunter is the kind of slow-burn wilderness thriller that gets under your skin the way cold seeps through a cabin wall—quiet at first, then suddenly everywhere. Shawn Linden wrings nerve-jangling suspense from the simplest elements: snow, silence, a trap line, and the creeping sense that something far worse than a rogue animal is circling just out of sight. The film’s greatest weapon is Camille Sullivan, who turns a life of hard routine into a portrait of fierce, believable resolve, anchoring every tightening screw of tension with raw humanity. It’s bleak, brutal, and unapologetically intense—especially in its violence—so it won’t be for the squeamish, but if you want a thriller with atmosphere you can practically breathe and twists that land like a snapped branch in the dark, this one delivers.
Hunter Hunter is aiming for a slow-burn wilderness thriller that gradually shifts from man-vs-nature into something far uglier and more human, with a bleak, tense atmosphere that’s genuinely effective for a while. The problem is it ultimately leans hard on shock and brutality, and the final stretch is so punishing and graphic that it can feel less like catharsis and more like the movie daring you to sit through it. Some of the “themes” about survival and humanity are there, but they can come off as a thin excuse for escalating nastiness, and a few plot turns strain credibility when you stop to think about them. If you want a grim, grimy thriller with strong performances and a relentless sense of dread, it delivers; if you’re sensitive to severe gore or you hate films that end in extreme ugliness, this is absolutely not your night.
