Sweetwater (2013)
In the late 1800s, a fanatical religious leader, a renegade Sheriff, and a former prostitute collide in a blood triangle on the rugged plains of the New Mexico Territory.
What people think about Sweetwater
Sweetwater is the kind of lean, dust-choked Western-thriller that lives and dies on atmosphere, and it has it in spades: wide New Mexico skies, stark frontier design, and a sense that every quiet moment is just the wind holding its breath. January Jones brings a flinty, hard-earned resolve to Sarah, while Jason Isaacs makes the Prophet a chillingly charismatic menace and Ed Harris turns the sheriff into a fascinating wild card, sometimes funny in a grim, off-kilter way. The movie’s pleasures are tactile and immediate—handsome cinematography, sharp performances, and a pulpy streak of dark humor that keeps it from sinking into pure misery. It is, however, a rough ride with sexual content and violent payback baked into its bones, so if you like your Westerns clean and comforting, this one isn’t that—but if you want a stylish, nasty little frontier showdown, it’s worth saddling up.
Sweetwater is clearly aiming for a grimy, old-school revenge Western with a nasty cult villain, a morally bent lawman, and a woman clawing her way back from trauma. The problem is it plays more like a checklist of bleak genre beats than a story with real tension or fresh personality, and the direction leans on heavy-handed symbolism without earning much emotional weight. January Jones has the right look for the era, but the central character work can feel thin, leaving the violence and cruelty to do the heavy lifting instead of compelling stakes. If you’re here for Ed Harris and Jason Isaacs chewing scenery in a dusty, mean-spirited frontier thriller, you’ll get some value, but if you want a sharp, suspenseful Western with depth and payoff, this one may feel empty and unpleasant for the time you invest.
