My Salinger Year (2020)
A college grad takes a clerical job working for the literary agent of the renowned, reclusive writer J.D. Salinger.
What people think about My Salinger Year
My Salinger Year is special because it turns the machinery of the literary world into something intimate and quietly thrilling, finding big emotional stakes in small, handwritten moments. Philippe Falardeau directs with a tender, graceful touch, letting 1990s New York feel lived-in and human rather than romanticized, while Margaret Qualley makes Joanna’s coming-of-age both winning and credible—an aspiring writer learning how to listen before she learns how to speak. Sigourney Weaver is terrific as the formidable gatekeeper of old-school professionalism, and the film’s charm comes from watching warmth and empathy seep through the cracks of rigid rules. It’s a gentle, sincere drama rather than a plot-heavy one, so if you’re drawn to character, atmosphere, and the messy courage of starting out, it’s an easy film to fall for.
My Salinger Year wants to be a quiet, coming-of-age snapshot of a young writer learning what ambition, boundaries, and adulthood actually cost inside a dusty, old-school literary agency. The problem is it often plays like a softened, self-serious riff on familiar “demanding boss/naive assistant” territory, with emotions kept at arm’s length and the literary-world mystique never digging as deep as it hints it will. If you’re expecting sharp wit, big catharsis, or a juicy Salinger-centric story, this may feel muted and a bit too polite for its own good. That said, Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver do solid, watchable work, and if you like gentle period vibes and low-stakes character drift, it can pass a calm evening without offending you.
