Closed Circuit (2013)

Closed Circuit is the kind of thriller that doesn’t need to shout to tighten its grip: it draws you in with the chilly, procedural realism of the British legal system and then quietly turns the screws until paranoia feels like a rational response. Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall are terrific as ex-lovers forced into professional proximity, their guarded chemistry adding a human pulse to a story about secrecy, surveillance, and the way “national security” can become a convenient blindfold. John Crowley directs with smart restraint, letting dense conversations, loaded silences, and a steadily darkening atmosphere do the heavy lifting instead of cheap twists. It’s not the right pick if you want a high-octane action ride, but if you like intelligent, adult suspense that trusts you to keep up, it’s a sleek, unsettling watch.

Closed Circuit wants to be a slick, grown-up conspiracy thriller about secrecy, surveillance, and how the justice system can be bent to protect power, and on paper it’s a cracking setup. Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall do solid work selling the strained ex-lovers dynamic, and the London legal/MI5 atmosphere has a classy, procedural sheen. The problem is the film rarely builds the white-knuckle tension its premise promises, and the twists start to feel like familiar genre beats delivered with a bit too much convenience and not enough airtight logic. If you’re allergic to plot holes and “just go with it” contrivances, or you want a mystery that genuinely surprises, this may test your patience; if you’re happy with a competent, talky thriller carried by strong actors, it’s an acceptable one-evening watch.
